چکیده

Proof-theory has traditionally been developed based on linguistic (symbolic) representations of logical proofs. Recently, however, logical reasoning based on diagrammatic or graphical representations has been investigated by logicians. Euler diagrams were introduced in the 18th century by Euler [1768]. But it is quite recent (more precisely, in the 1990s) that logicians started to study them from a formal logical viewpoint. We propose a novel approach to the formalization of Euler diagrammatic reasoning, in which diagrams are defined not in terms of regions as in the standard approach, but in terms of topological relations between diagrammatic objects. We formalize the unification rule, which plays a central role in Euler diagrammatic reasoning, in a style of natural deduction. We prove the soundness and completeness theorems with respect to a formal set-theoretical semantics. We also investigate structure of diagrammatic proofs and prove a normalization theorem.

A Diagrammatic Reasoning System with Euler Circles

This paper is concerned with Euler diagrammatic reasoning. Proof-theory has traditionally been developed based on linguistic (symbolic) representations of logical proofs. Recently, however, logical reasoning based on diagrammatic or graphical representations has been investigated by many logicians. Euler diagrams were introduced in the 18th century by Leonhard Euler [1768]. But it is quite rece...

Sequent Calculus for Euler Diagrams

Proof systems play a major role in the formal study of diagrammatic logical systems. Typically, the style of inference is not directly comparable to traditional sentential systems, to study the the diagrammatic aspects of inference. In this work, we present a proof system for Euler diagrams with shading in the style of sequent calculus. We prove it to be sound and complete. Furthermore we outli...

Two Types of Diagrammatic Inference Systems: Relation-based System as Natural Deduction and Region-based System as Resolution

Since the 1990s, reasoning with Venn and Euler diagrams has been studied from mathematical and logical viewpoints. The standard approach to a formalization is a “regionbased” approach, where a diagram is defined as a set of regions. An alternative is a “relation-based” approach, where a diagram is defined in terms of topological relations (inclusion and exclusion) between circles and points. In...

Book review Logic and Visual Information

Researchers in the elds of philosophy, logic, computer science, and formal semantics are beginning to ask interesting questions concerning graphical representation. In addition to being a primary mode of human communication, such representations have been used even in the teaching of logic eg. Venn diagrams, or the Hyperproof" system. If the observation that the visual presentation of informati...

Spatial Logic and the Complexity of Diagrammatic Reasoning

Researchers have sought to explain the observed \eecacy" of diagrammatic reasoning (DR) via the notions of \limited abstraction" and inexpressivity 17, 20]. We argue that application of the concepts of computational complexity to systems of dia-grammatic representation is necessary for the evaluation of precise claims about their eecacy. We show here how to give such an analysis. Centrally, we ...
